Greetings 5SH,
I hope you are doing well as you finish up your summer vacation. I am starting to get our (yes it's still yours) classroom ready for the new 5th graders coming in. I will be asking them if they are still interested in working with elephants or if they want to defend a different animal. No matter what, I wanted you to know that the work you did to help elephants is going forward and I wanted to tell you some news.
I just heard from a woman named Lina Sideras, from the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi, Kenya. The Sheldrick Trust is the place we decided to work with because we could really follow what the money was doing for elephants. Lina Sideras was so excited to hear about the work you had done on behalf of elephants. She said that it takes $50.00 to support an orphaned elephant for one year. Thus, with the money you raised, you could support an orphaned elephant for 5 years! Or, perhaps we could foster two elephants with the money.
I had written to the Wildlife Trust about supporting the elephant named Wendi, because of our Wendy, but she said that Wendi, the elephant, is now quite a bit older and about to be totally back in the wild. She suggested we pick a younger elephant who will need more support for longer and who we can follow to see how he or she is doing. She gave me a list of the elephants to look at- she said the younger ones are at the top. CLICK HERE FOR A LINK OF ORPHANS. I have to warn you that it is quite sad to read about this long list of elephants whose parents were killed, but it's good to think about the babies being helped.
The Wildlife Trust keeps a detailed blog about current news. Just TODAY they posted information about their latest rescue of a baby elephant named Vuria. You can read about how they got him and see photos of how he is doing by CLICKING HERE! Perhaps we might want to support him?
I am learning how to create a poll on our web page. It is below. If you want, you can try to complete the poll or just add a comment about what you think. I know some of you are away or not near the computer, so I will not make a decision until the week school starts. Then, you could come in and tell me your thoughts AND say hello.
Bye for now,
Ms. Stark
